The first building

digging the foundations

The Phase 1 plan for the orphanage is to build five self-contained houses, each providing sleeping, kitchen and living space.

Digging the foundations for the first block in May 2005.

carrying water

The nearest water was a mile away.

The only way of getting it to site for mixing concrete and cement was the traditional way - on heads.

foundations

By the end of May, the ground was prepared and foundations made
scaffolding
By early June, the walls were starting to go up,and three days later, they were high enough to need scaffolding
drilling the borehole
In June, the borehole was drilled - 40 metres through solid rock - giving a secure water supply for the building work and for the orphanage.
The photo below gives a view of the site in its surroundings. The first house being built is to the left. The building towards the right, behind the car, is the temporary accommodation for the builders. Behind that is the village church. the site
roofing materials The builders cleared the area in front of their temporary accommodation of the long grass - the grass was kept for making a fence later. They have turned the cleared patch into a vegetable garden, and crops are already growing.
roof building

By mid-July, the roof timbers have arrived.

A week later, and the roof is starting to take shape.

And by October, the first block is complete! stage 1 complete
