The People driving Smile Malawi ELSPETH BAECKE
Her answer was to build a Childrens' Centre in Malawi which opened in October 2006. The Centre takes in homeless street children from the city of Blantyre and gives outreach care to children in the local village of Ndokota. Elspeth is a UK based civil engineer and maths teacher who now spends all her free time running Smile Malawi and overseeing the project in Africa. She is British and lives near London where she works as a consultant. With the first Childrens' Centre now open, she is formulating plans for a further Centre and to promote tourism in Malawi. In 2003 Elspeth's heart was wrenched by the plight of orphans and children in Africa.
She prayed that God would show her a way to help, not just by sending money but by actually doing something herself.
Glad is Malawian and lives in Malawi, close to beautiful Lake Malawi.
Trained in banking and financial management, he now runs his own business dealing in transport.
Glad met Elspeth in England and became her adviser on Africa.
Together they formed the plan to help the children of Malawi.
He returned to his native country in 2003 and has continued to help set things up out there, liaising with Elspeth back in England.
Charles is the youngest member of the team.
He is currently the Project Manager and Executive Secretary for Smile Malawi.
Charles has played a large role in the set up of the organisation in Malawi liaising with Government officials, necessary bodies and local organisations. He managed all construction work and is an enthusiastic and energetic contact in Malawi.
